Welding Gas Cylinder Safety Tips

Improper handling of gas cylinders is very common in the welding industry. The majority of gases used for welding contain a mixture of CO2, Argon, and Helium which are inflammable and non volatile but can still be extremely unsafe. When a cylinder gets knock over, the valve can break off, causing the high pressure exiting inside the cylinder to cause harm to you, or people around you.

Proper caution should be used when handling a gas cylinder. Accidents can come about very quickly and can cause irreversible damage. The purpose of this post is to provide simple steps that can be followed when using a gas cylinder.

Have a continuous knowledge of your surroundings. If you are carrying, removing from a machine or the storing the cylinder, it ought to be firmly fastened. If at all possible, utilize a threaded cylinder cap when transporting the cylinder. This protects the valve in case the cylinder is knocked over or bumps into something.

There are a couple of different options when moving a gas cylinder; first, use a cart if one is accessible. Secondly, you can roll the cylinder by placing it in a vertical position. The preferred method is to use a cart which is intended specifically for gas cylinders. Most carts come complete with a chain or some other kind of restraint to lock the cylinder in place.

Always bind your cylinder with some kind of safety tie or chain while the cylinder is not being used. Additionally, never hang cables, MIG guns, power cords, welding torches as the cylinder was never intended to be a storage hook. With the likelihood of heat and the possibility of arcs forming in combination with the cylinder may cause damage to the cylinder and be really hazardous.

Gas cylinder should always be used in an upright position. Many cylinders hold liquid as well as gas. Placing the cylinder in a horizontal position during use can allow the liquid to escape or bleed out of the cylinder.

Using your common sense is the best advice when handling a gas cylinder. It is essential that you be certain you know what you are doing when operating all welding and cutting equipment. If you are unsure of yourself, contact somebody who is knowledgeable. With all the resources at your fingertips, accurate information is just moments away.

Remember, always use caution when handling welding gas. Accidents can occur, so it is your duty to do your best to prevent them. Again, use your common sense to keep the situation safe. If a situation feels unsafe, it probably is. Take a few minutes to ask somebody who is knowledgeable and it will prevent injuries in the long run. Single vs. Two Stage Regulators

Single vs Two Stage Regualtors:

Single stage regulators are the most popular and the least expensive. Single stage regulators reduce the cylinder pressure to the outlet pressure in one step. Two stage regulators reduce the cylinder pressure in two steps.

The single stage regulators are use in most general welding / cutting applications. These applications do not require an exact outlet delivery pressure throughout the cycle of the cylinder from full to empty. As the cylinder decreases in pressure the delivery outlet pressure will increase.

Two stage regulators are used when an outlet delivery pressure needs to be maintained at all times. Applications would be lab, gas chromatograghy or precision welding. The gas is regulated in two steps for greater delivery accuracy. The first stage is preset and the second stage is fully adjustable to the regulator delivery range.

Gauges: Most regulators are supplied with two gauges. The number of gauges does not determine if it is a single or two stage regulator. The gauges are used to determine amount of gas remaining in the cylinder and outlet delivery pressure. The high pressure gauge located next to the inlet port is used to determine amount of gas remaining in cylinder. The low pressure gauge next to the delivery port is the delivery pressure gauge.

Weldfabulous now has the Miller Electric Blue Rage auto darkening helmet # 241458. This is a great looking helmet that Miller has just released. The blue rage helmet is in the Performance series of helmets from Miller Electric. The performance series is the Mid-Range of welding helmets from Miller.

The auto darkening lens is a variablle shade #8 - #13, variable sensitivity and delay controls. There are three independent arc sensors and the helmet weighs only 17 ounces. The lens speed is 1/20,000 second with a TIG rating of (5-Amps and below). The viewing area is 7.22 square inches.

Controls on the lens are analog and not digital. They are located below the lens and provide quick adjustments of 8-13 shade (with a ultra-clear #3 light state), lens sensitivity/grind mode and delay control.

Cover lens with spatter gasket protect the auto-darkening lens. 5 additional outside, and 2 additional inside cover lenses are included. Convenient push buttons release the front cover lens holder to provide easy access for front cover lens changing. This is a great improvement from the previous models!

Milwaukee 6190-20 14" Dry Cut Chop Saw

"cold") cut technology which will cut on average three times faster than an abrasive machine and costs 1-1/2 times less to operate. The saw produces little to no sparks when cutting and leaves a virtually burr-free finish. The motor is a 15 amp, 4.8 max H.P. The base is a heavy-duty cast aluminum reinforced with a 1/4 in. steel plate. The vise and back fence is tool free. The horizontal D-handle provides optimum comfort whether the tool is on the ground or sitting on a bench.

This saw has no Load RPM of 1500 RPM. You cannot use abrasive wheels on this saw. We do carry the replacement blades in either 72 teeth or 90. The Spectrum 375 X-Treme is rated at cutting 3/8 inch mild steel at 14 inches per minute. It will cut up to 5/8 inch mild steel at a slower rate of 5 inches per minute. This machine is equipped with Auto-Line. Auto-Line circuitry automatically connects to 115- 230 VAC, single-phase power, 50/60 Hz, without removing the covers to relink the power source. Weldfabulous now handles the Sait 14" EZ-Chop chop saw wheels. The 24039 is packaged 10 to a box. The diameter of this chop saw wheel is 14". It is made with aluminum oxide grain for general purpose cool cutting on thin metals. This can be used with the following metals: Metal studding, thin rebar, light gauge and heavy metals.

The blade has a 1" bore with a 3/32" width. The max RPM for this wheel 4,400 RPM.
